Adapted Games
Many games can be adapted to scaling conversations. Checkers, Jenga, Connect Four, Marbles, Bowling, and Pick-up Sticks are all games that have ten or more pieces that can be moved, stacked, gathered, collected, and assigned meaning. Activities such as stacking blocks, building Legos, and stringing beads are also easily adapted to scaling conversations.
Scaling Collaborative Goals
Another effective way to talk about setting and scaling a collaborative goal is represented in Figure 6.2 (Visser, 2010). The vertical axis is the 1–10 scale for the son’s goal. The horizontal axis is the 1–10 scale for Mom’s goal. Quadrant A represents where no goals are met. The B quadrants represent Mom’s goal attained (lower right) or the son’s goal attained (upper left). Mom and son can be invited to talk about what is important to them and fill in the space on the B quadrants of the diagram. Then the therapist might say, Let’s imagine, somehow, Mom’s goal of you being safe is met AND the son’s goal of getting to play with friends more is met. What would that look like? Filling in the C quadrant with all these joint solution ideas is the next step. Finally, draw the diagonal line from the bottom of A through the top of C which becomes the new 1–10 scale of the joint goal. Follow up with scaling questions: On this 1–10 scale, which represents both mom’s and son’s goals being met, where are each of you now? What is the highest you have ever been on the scale? How did you accomplish that? What else puts you up that high? Imagine you were one step higher. What will be happening then?
